The boats handle like shopping carts; a joystick governs speed, a wheel manages direction, and the current does most of the work.
Operators cluster their docks near Centraal Station, Leidseplein, and the Jordaan. Morning departures benefit from lighter traffic — commercial barges and water taxis dominate the canals after noon. Tourist tax adds a surcharge to the base rate, and most rentals require a deposit held against hull damage. The boats seat four to six, though two passengers allow easier navigation through the tight bends near the Nine Streets district. Weather matters less than expected; canvas canopies shield against rain, and the canals stay navigable through all but the coldest January weeks when ice floes drift past the Anne Frank House.
